Visual Effects tends to go to a prestige pick with other nominations. LARRY: 1917 is definitely the safe bet here. With that in mind, I’m probably going for 1917, which also had plenty of practical effects and we can’t forget about that chonky rat. The Irishman made of course a big deal out of de-aging its leads, and while the effect is at points very impressive, there’s also plenty of moments where it reaches Polar Express level of uncanny valley. Generally, the movie you want to go in this category is the one that’s most prestigious, so you would have to look at the Best Picture nominees. It feels like an odd list this year with the likes of Lion King being pretty much a full special effect (and the Golden Globes even nominated it for Animated Feature). Well, two Best Picture nominees and three Disney movies. Should’ve Nominated: The Bird
